AIDS Medicine

The term Aids ( acquired immune deficiency syndrome ) is defined as a severe immunological disorder caused by the retrovirus HIV ( human immunodeficiency virus ) .

It began to spread its roots at a rapid rate in early 1980's.

Those who were infected by aids could barely live for a few years, once you're infected by this disease the chances of survival are very rare. In other words, it's a direct road towards death. But in recent times, people infected by HIV (the virus that causes aids) generally tend to live longer and healthier lives, because now there are many effective aids medicines available to fight the infection. However, treatment for HIV is still not easy because of many side effects from the powerful antiretroviral drugs. It can only be prevented in the early stages by the treatment of aids medicines otherwise the disease can't be cured and will probably lean the recipient to death.

Aids medicines generally fall into the following three categories:

Reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors:

The purpose of this medicine is to block and create a resistance in action of protein of named reverse transcriptase which the HIV uses to reproduce itself. Here are some Reverse transcriptase inhibitors such as AZT , ddI , and 3TC.

Protease inhibitors:

The purpose of this medicine is to disable the production of a protein that HIV uses to reproduce itself. Protease inhibitor , such as saquinovir, amprenavir, or atazanavir, to AZT and 3TC has proved very effective, but the drug combination does not eliminate the virus from the body.

 Fusion inhibitors:

These newer medicines are used to halt the HIV virus from entering into the cells of the body.

When used in combinations, these medications are termed Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). Although these medicines help people to recover from HIV to a certain extent but they don't cure you completely and can still transmit the disease to others through direct contact of blood, breast milk , preseminal fluid etc. To put it bluntly people infected by HIV still have the virus in their bodies even after the usage of aids medicines .
