Asbestos are toxic. If you inhale asbestos fibers it may cause serious illness. From the studies of the people who are exposed to asbestos in shipyards and factories we know that by breathing high levels of asbestos products can increase the risks of having lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis in which the lungs become scarred with fibrous tissue.

The risk of having lung cancer depends on the inhaling of asbestos fibers. Inhaling asbestos fibers are more dangerous then smoking. Many people who are has the disease called asbestosis are usually exposed to the asbestos fibers for a long time. The symptoms do not usually appear for this disease but appears 25-35 years after the first exposure to asbestos.

In 1980s European Union with other developed countries banned the extraction, use, fabrication and processing of asbestos products. There are many types of asbestos fibers, asbestos were used in many products to make them strong as asbestos fibers are very good heat insulator and fire resistance. Many things which are commonly used in our homes may be made of asbestos. Such as roofing and siding shingles which are made of asbestos cement. But asbestos are not used in our homes now as they are banned. Houses of 1930 - 1950 were made of asbestos cement. Asbestos may also be present in textured paint and also in patching compounds which are used on ceiling joints and walls. Walls and floors were also protected with asbestos paper. In old houses pipes for hot water and steam pipes were also coated with asbestos materials.

If you think that any product of yours contains asbestos then it is better to leave the product if it is in good condition because products in good condition never release asbestos fibers. Regular check up and inspection is necessary for the safety of your family. If there are damage such as abrasions, tears, or water damage then this product may release asbestos fiber.
