It can describe a number of problems related with heart at time of birth and it is one of the most common birth defect found in many people. It is responsible for the death in first year of life and it is most deadly problem than any other disease found at birth time. Many of these kinds of defects need to be followed carefully and they require proper scheduled healing procedures than any other disease requires.
Congenital heart disease is often divided into two types which are:
Non-cyanotic: Without any blue discoloration and no lacking in relative oxygen. Ventricular Septal Defect, Aortic Stenosis, Pulmonic Stenosis, Endocardial Cushion Defect all are examples of diseases characterized in non-cyanotic congenital heart diseases.
Cyanotic: in which blue discoloration is found that is caused by the relative lacking of the oxygen. Hypo-plastic left heart, transposition of the great vessels, Epstein's anomaly and truncus arteriousis are all examples of cyanotic congenital heart diseases.
Majority of congenital heart diseases occurs individually without depending on other diseases. However, some of them are found to be bound with another defect disease. Most of them are found in genes and it is hard for them to cure but not impossible. No known cause for the congenital heart disease is found and the chapter is still in research and requires more studies. Though, some drugs like retinoic acid for acne, chemicals, alcohol and some infections like rubella during pregnancy can contribute for the congenital heart disease.
As these heart diseases are present at birth, they are usually not seen but in later life, they can be known. A proper medical checkup at the time of birth can assure from heart complications and others for the parents. |
