It is often abbreviated as ITP and has few other names like immune thrombocytopenic purpura. In usually cases of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, no symptoms are revealed but in cases when very low platelet count is observed, the patient can found to be have visible symptoms including purpura or bruises and other severe bleeding diathesis type conditions.
ITP can have decrease in platelet counts at the time of toxic exposures. The immune system damages platelets which are essential for normal blood clotting.
Certain immune system cells produce antibodies in the blood which are responsible for platelet destruction. Platelets function is to clamp to block the hole in blood clot from where the vessels are damaged. In children, the disease is acute and can be viral infection but in adults, this disease is chronic and often occurs after a viral infection with certain use of drugs for immune disorder. Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura is more common in women as compared to men and more common in children as compared to adults.
A few other symptoms other than bruising found in ITP are bleeding inside skin which indicated with red spots on skin, bleeding in nose or mouth and abnormally heavy menstruation. Doctor's test and examine to check the blood clot and platelet count in order to confirm it. Complete blood count CBC and PT are done to check them. Sometimes a bone marrow examination is also done.
The treatment for this disease in children is not required and it fades away soon without medication while some children require it. In adults, anti inflammatory steroid medicines are used or in some cases, spleen is removed by surgery. There are plenty of other names of disease but more common names are Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura and immune thrombocytopenic purpura or ITP. |
