Neuropathology comes under anatomic pathology and
it is also considered a subspecialty of anatomic pathology.
One thing must be remembered that the neuropathology
is another branch and neuropathy is another branch.
Most people merge the two different branch of medicine.
The neuropathy is the branch of medicine which studies
the disorders of the nerves.
The work of a neuropathologist is very tough and complex.
They usually examine the biopsy tissue from the spinal
cord and from the brain.
The biopsy is done by cutting a small piece of muscle
from the affected area and then examining it to diagnose
the disease. The biopsy is advised after the detection
of mass by the radiologic imaging. The tough job for
the neuropathologist is the autopsies. They have to
help in the post-mortem diagnosis that affects the
central nervous system.
Now there is a new way of biopsy available which is
known as opunch skin biopsy. This biopsy test can
recognize the nerve fibers in the skin and can identify
the small fiber neuropathies.
This test is getting popular and it is available
in some selected laboratories and in some universities
as well. This test system replaces the sural nerve
biopsy.
As the neuropathology is a subfield of anatomical
pathology, the physician who wants to specialize in
neuropathology will have to complete a fellowship
after the residency in general pathology or anatomical
pathology. When a disease in the nervous system is
suspected the biopsy of a nervous tissue is taken
out and sent to the neuropathologist to examine the
biopsy using microscopes or other molecular methods
and to diagnose the disease.
