Otology

Otology is the branch of medicine which focuses on pathological anatomy, and physiology of the ear and its related functions and structures. It also studies the diagnosis, prevention,

 

treatment of the disease regarding the hearing and vestibular sensory systems. Some very popular and important concerns of otology are finding the causes of tinnitus and to develop different methods of treatment, diagnosis of Meniere’s disease, studying the signal processing in the patient of cochlear implant, and diagnosis of postural control areas and vestibule-ocular mechanisms.
In very simple words the term otology refers to the medical speciality that studies and focuses on the disorders and diseases regarding ear and other hearing problems.

 

 

Most people merge the two different fields of medicine one is the ENT and the other is otology. As most people who suffers from any sort of ear infection consult with ENT specialist but the truth is that the ENT specialist only spend 20% of their practice on the ear issue but most of their practice involves sore throats, and tonsil problems. The otologist is the person who practice dealing with ear and hearing issues only. An otologist possess every knowledge which a ENT possess but to become an otologist a person have to take addition training of two year otology fellowship after which he can become a otologist.

 

 

Otology is concerned with ear and hearing only so they are the ear specialist. The otology isn’t much popular as compared to ENT because to become ENT a person just have to study four years of medical school but to become otologist same person have to undergo through two extra years of otology fellowship. Now otology is becoming more popular as more and more people are getting aware of this branch of medicine. This is also becoming popular because there are many problems which an ENT can’t solve so he refers the patient to an otologist.
