It happens in those people which are more risky to have blood clot forming or thrombosis conditions. This condition can further produce risks of strokes and pulmonary conditions like embolism (blockage of pulmonary artery). The disease can be diagnosed soon but usually the case is very rare and it cannot be diagnosed until the first blood clot incident. Though, patients with clear family history about the same disease can be diagnosed quickly.
There are different degrees of condition of protein S deficiency and they are commonly known as Type I, II and III. Protein S assists the work of protein C and it has two forms in the body which are; bound and free. The free forms of protein S can determine the disease types. For instance, in type 1 free is not in high enough quantity to assist the Protein C, while, in Type II, protein S is not constructed properly and it cannot perform its task. In the type III case, free is low to work with Protein C.
Type I and Type III are differing because in both of them, bound forms are different. In Type I, bound forms are low in quantity while in Type III they are in normal quantity.
There are no specific symptoms for protein S deficiency and as we mentioned earlier that it is rare condition and only blood clot formation can guide to this disease. Often an illness occurs like deep vein thrombosis. The condition forms clot in early 20s. Once it is recognized, treatment is really easy. Patients are given anti coagulation medications and Warfarin is main choice of medication for this disease. |
