Spleen is located in the left side of the abdomen and it is of ovoid shape. Spleen is friable and it is brown in color. Spleen is located just below the diaphragm. The structure which separates the abdomen and chest cavity is known as diaphragm. Peritoneum is the name of a thin membrane which covers the spleen. In the abdominal cavity the spleen is located near the 9 th , 10 th and 11 th ribs.
At the time of birth the weight of spleen is about 10 grams and it grows and becomes about 135 grams at teen age. The size of spleen is 12 cm in length and 7cm in breadth. The size of spleen reduces during the period of adult hood. The shape of spleen is roughly correspondent to the shape of tighten fist. As told you before that spleen is a lymphoid organ. The lymphoid organs are those which are related to the immunity system. Lymphoid organs include thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, tonsils, bone marrow, and adenoids.
