Valvular heart disease

Valvular heart disease is any type of heart disease which is evolving any one or more from the heart valves. There are four valves in human heart namely, aortic and mitral valves which are on the left while pulmonary and tricuspid valves which are on the right.

Problems in valve can be congenital i.e. birth defect or can acquired later because of any other cause in life. Treatment for the valvular heart disease can be through medications usually but depending on the severity of valve condition, it may require valve repair or even replacement from an artificial heart valve.

Whatever becomes the cause of valvular heart disease like rheumatic fever, cardiac dilatation, age related calcification of heart, congenital heart disease or any other, the heart valves patented in one to two years. Either the valves openings become too narrow to form difficulty is for blood passing through valves,

which is usually known as stenosis, or blood leaks passing through the valves when valves become incompetent or closed, this condition is known as regurgitation.

The stenosis can increase "damming up" of the blood and it can increase pressure on the cardiac chambers behind the valve. Regurgitation can cause extra blood in the cardiac chambers when the valves are closed. Both,

the increased pressure or increased blood volume can weaken the heart muscle and it can ultimately lead to heart failure. The turbulence of blood flow in either case of stenosis and regurgitation, the heart murmur is heard by the doctor as a symptom for the valvular disease. Echo cardiogram is what used to diagnose suspected patients for valvular heart disease.

Recognizing which valves is creating problem is necessary for the cardiologists and they used different diagnosis procedures to clearly identify the patient's problem. You can look for more details regarding valvular heart disease in an expert's manual online or can ask your cardiologists if you have any problems to discuss.
